Electric Cinema
Birmingham not only looks cinematic, but it has a history in the silver screen too. Once housing over 100 cinemas, The Electric Cinema is the only independent cinema left in the city today. Since opening in 1909, it’s had many reincarnation perhaps most notably as The Tivoli in 1984 when it gave props to a healthy selection of soft porn and horror movies.
Today it’s incredible history is well respected through more high brow flicks .Berlin Film Festival prize winners like I’ve Loved You So Long and the Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen’s Hunger starring Fassbender are shown alongside the latest Bond and Brad Pitt films.
If that’s not enough, eschew the clichéd popcorn in favour of Electric’s fine wines and nibbles in the Art Deco bar or on a sofa as you enjoy the film. Chouchoute Chocolaterie, Perrier Jouet champagne, smooth coffee, and Twinnings Afternoon tea. We defy you not to feel just a little bit like Oscar Wilde here.
Why should you go?
Because it’s the oldest working cinema in the UK.
