Where to drink

While we defy you to drink any Brummie under the table we challenge you to have a go and guarantee a rollicking good time while you’re at it. The UK’s second city has many things on rival London, one being space. And as such listed pubs that have stood the test of time are among the biggest and best in the country.

These very slightly off the beaten track so if you fancy something a bit more swinging there are countless style bars around too. Here’s a pick of the best.

The Trocodaro, City Centre – Built with coloured glazed tiles and terracotta this beautiful pub was formally a fire engine house. Address: 17 Temple Street. Telephone: 0121 643 6107.

The Old Joint Stock, City Centre – a converted bank and spacious pub with attractive high ceilings and interior. Comfy, relaxed and like a bank it’s easy to lose all your hard earned lucca here. Address: 4 Temple Row. Telephone: 0121 200 1892. Website: www.oldjointstocktheatre.co.uk

The Rainbow, Digbeth – An old Victorian pub favoured by the local art crowd, this pub has housed parties for Vice magazine and was voted by Mixmag “The UK’s most underground club”. Address: 160 High Street Deritend. Telephone: 0121 772 8174. Website: www.therainbowpub.com

The Barton Arms, Aston — Erected in 1901 this unchanged Victorian pub was frequented by Charlie Chaplin in the 20s as well as Laurel and Hardy. Address: 144 High Street Aston. Telephone: 0121 333 5988.
